CEO POV: Embracing Ambition

The 17th edition of CEO POV! This week, we're diving into the art of trying new things - ambition. As a visionary leader, I’m drawn to grand ideas and rapid progress. But as Gary Vaynerchuk wisely said, "Remember, the bigger the ambition, the slower you need to go!" This quote resonates deeply with me and serves as a valuable reminder that pursuing lofty goals requires both patience and persistence.

The Double-Edged Sword of Ambition

Ambition can be a powerful motivator. It drives us to push boundaries, explore new horizons, and achieve greatness. For me, ambition fuels my vision for the Kearney Area Chamber, Impact Art, and beyond. However, as much as I’m passionate about big ideas and rapid execution, I've learned that sometimes ambition needs to be tempered with patience.

When we set ambitious goals, it's tempting to rush through the process, eager to see immediate results. Yet, the journey towards achieving those goals often requires a more measured pace. Taking time to carefully plan, test, and refine our approaches can make the difference between success and failure.

Learning from My Team

One of the most gratifying aspects of my role is witnessing the ambition of my team. Take my marketing director, for example. His constant drive to try new things and improve his skills is a reflection of the ambitious culture we strive to cultivate. His enthusiasm for innovation not only enhances the Chamber's initiatives but also inspires those around him to think bigger and bolder.

Just as with my own ambition, I encourage my team to embrace their goals with both enthusiasm and patience. Whether it's experimenting with new strategies or developing creative solutions, the key is to balance ambition with thoughtful execution.

Action Items for Embracing Ambition

To harness ambition effectively, consider these steps:

1. Set Clear Milestones: Break down ambitious goals into manageable milestones. This helps in tracking progress and maintaining motivation.

2. Foster a Growth Mindset: Encourage a culture where trying new things and learning from failures is valued. This mindset supports ongoing improvement and innovation.

3. Balance Speed with Precision: While ambition drives us to move quickly, ensure that each step is well-considered and deliberate. Quality often outweighs speed.

4. Celebrate Small Wins: Recognize and celebrate achievements along the way. This not only boosts morale but also reinforces the value of persistence and patience.

The Balance of Ambition and Patience

Ambition is a powerful force that drives us towards remarkable achievements. However, it’s important to balance ambition with patience, allowing time for thoughtful execution and refinement. By doing so, we set ourselves and our teams up for long-term success and fulfillment.

Thanks for reading! Continue to dream big, act wisely, and embrace the journey with both enthusiasm and patience.

Best,

Derek
