Welcome back to CEO POV, where we delve into leadership principles that shape our journey. This blog is about my point of view in exploring a topic that's essential for any leader: Daring to Dream. As I’ve covered in previous blogs – from creativity to commitment, collaboration, change, communication, overcoming adversity, and gratitude – having a vision and setting goals are critical components of effective leadership. But there’s something magical about dreaming that goes beyond setting goals: it fuels our passion, ignites our creativity, and propels us toward greatness.
The Power of Vision and Dreaming
In the whirlwind of leadership responsibilities, it's easy to get caught up in day-to-day tasks and operational details. However, true leadership involves daring to dream big, envisioning possibilities beyond the immediate horizon, and setting ambitious goals. I have a friend who always says, "Never underestimate the power of small-minded thinking." As I’ve discussed before, creativity and commitment are integral to leadership, but dreaming takes us a step further, inspiring us to reach new heights.
Dreaming Big in the Driveway
Let me take you back to my childhood, where my passion for sports and dreams of becoming a professional athlete shaped my journey. Growing up, I spent countless hours in the driveway, shooting hoops or on the front lawn throwing passes to myself. My imagination was my playground. As I dribbled and shot, I wasn’t just a kid playing a game; I was Michael Jordan driving the baseline for a slam dunk, or when throwing passes I was John Elway throwing a game-winning pass.
In those moments, I wasn't just playing; I was living out my dreams. Even though I never became a professional athlete, 6 foot and 180 pounds wasn't the genetics the pro scouts were salivating over, those dreams pushed me to strive for excellence. Besides the cognitive health using your imagination does for someone, it taught me the value of hard work, resilience, and setting ambitious goals. It was this same spirit of dreaming that later guided me in my professional life, from doing team building to starting Impact Art to leading the Kearney Area Chamber.
Dreaming and Leadership
Daring to dream isn’t just about having lofty ambitions; it’s about cultivating a vision that drives us forward. It's the creative spark that leads to innovation, the motivation behind commitment, and the inspiration that fuels collaboration. Just as we've explored in my 5 C's of Leadership series:
- Creativity: Dreams are the seeds of creativity, sparking new ideas and innovative solutions.
- Commitment: A clear vision and dreams give us the motivation to stay committed and persevere.
- Collaboration: Sharing our dreams and vision can rally others to join us in achieving common goals.
- Change: Embracing dreams means adapting and evolving to turn those visions into reality.
- Communication: Articulating our dreams and vision effectively helps inspire and align our teams.
Action Items for Embracing Dreams
Here are a few practical ways to embrace dreaming in your leadership:
1. Set Visionary Goals: Encourage yourself and your team to set bold, visionary goals that challenge the status quo.
2. Visualize Success: Take time to visualize your goals and the steps needed to achieve them. This helps reinforce your commitment and keeps the dream alive.
3. Share Your Vision: Communicate your dreams and vision with your team, inspiring them to align their efforts with the larger goals.
Conclusion: The Magic of Dreaming
Daring to dream is a powerful leadership quality that drives vision, fosters creativity, and inspires others, plus it's just fun to dream. As leaders, let's not only set goals but also dare to dream big, embracing the possibilities that lie beyond our immediate reach. By nurturing our dreams, we create a future filled with potential and innovation.
I also hope that kind of role modeling is noticed by my daughters and they aren't afraid to dream big!
Thank you for reading and here’s to dreaming big and turning those dreams into reality.
Best,
Derek
